The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
