The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Surprising Presence
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
