Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then found multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Police report initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in association with the event," they added.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.

An important official stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
