A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on recently would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
