A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
